  • The Lamentable Dramedy of Punch & Judy!

I'm turning 45, and I realized this year, beyond a shadow of a doubt, it's too late; No one is every going to ask me to play Hamlet. I missed the boat. Also, no one wants a short, dopey looking bald Hamlet... But, then I remembered hearing some puppeteer refer to Punch & Judy as “The Puppeteer's Hamlet”. And I've always wanted to do a Punch & Judy Show, ever since I played the part of Toby the Dog when I was 12.

Also, Punch & Judy is the same play as Hamlet really. Just as many people die pointlessly. Same beautiful, existentialist dialogue (“Oh that this too, too sullied flesh would melt, thaw and resolve itself into a dew” is only half as good as “Doctor: Mr Punch, are you dead? Punch: Yes, I am.”) Plus, I can make the whole show in my basement, and it's way shorter. Also, the Devil in it. And sausages. Punch and Judy is way better than Hamlet.
